A long, narrow hallway and staircase that had been left worn and dated. It was the first space anyone saw on arriving at the house, and the one that had been given the least attention.
We protected the staircase and cleared the hallway back to its subfloor, then prepared the walls, skirting and stairs for the new finishes. The floor was laid in a geometric patterned tile that gives the hallway its character from the moment the front door opens.
The staircase, string and skirting were painted in a deep, near-black finish, and a herringbone runner with bright striped borders was fitted up the flight, giving the entrance a strong, deliberate look that ties the ground floor together.
Process of work
Two photographs from the same hallway: the space cleared and protected at the start of the work, and the finished result with the new tiled floor, painted staircase and stair runner in place.
2 stages

01Stripped back and protected
The hallway at the start of the work: flooring lifted back to the subfloor, the stair treads protected with tape and sheeting, and new skirting and boards stacked ready to go in.

02The finished hallway
Handed back complete: geometric blue, grey and white floor tiles laid through the hallway, the staircase and skirting painted a deep near-black, and a herringbone runner with red and orange borders fitted up the flight.
A hallway that now makes a proper first impression, practical underfoot and full of character from the front door to the landing.
